Yakuri-ji Temple

This is the 85th of the 88 sacred temples in the Shikoku Pilgrimage route. Here, the Japanese Buddhist monk Kukai planted 8 roasted chestnuts in order to predict the outcome of his journey to China. When he returned, he found that the chestnuts have grown well despite having been roasted, thus he changed the temple’s name to Yakuri-ji, meaning “Temple of the Eight Chestnuts.” Kangiten (Nandikesvara, or Ganesh in the Buddhist pantheon) introduced from India is also enshrined here. Affectionately called Yakuri no Shoten-san, it is cherished by the people as a sacred place to pray for prosperous business, academic achievement, and marriage

Koya (Koyasan), a sacred place for the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Those who have completed visiting the 88 sites dedicate here the walking sticks and hats they used on the pilgrimage.
