Kushiro City Japanese Crane Reserve

This facility opened in 1958 with the aim of protecting and breeding the endangered red-crowned crane, and in 1970 it became the first facility in the world to successfully hatch red-crowned cranes through artificial means. The first director, Takahashi Ryoji, is famous as "the man who became a crane" because he taught the young cranes how to fly in place of their parents. To this day, visitors can see over a dozen red-crowned cranes up close all year round in an environment close to nature.
